Dr. Michael T. McNerney PhD, of Austin, Texas

Dr. Mike  manages an email discussion list for discussion about McNerney Family Genealogy. An email discussion list is basically an email address to which people subscribe. Anyone who subscribes is `on the list' and able to send email to the list; if the list gets email from someone not on the list, it bounces. Any email it receives from subscribers gets sent out to everyone who is on the list. Subscribers may opt to get these as they come, or may opt for a digest. The digest collects all the email it receives for the whole day and sends it out all in one bundle at some specified time, like midnight for example.

Anyway, send here to subscribe, with this line in the body of the message all by itself:

subscribe mcnerney <John M. McNerney>

except put your name in place of John M. McNerney. Don't use the brackets. Be sure to disable any auto signatures you may have appended to your outgoing messages.

And when you are subscribed (you will receive a notice), send your messages here. Keep the FAQ and other notices, they give more detailed instructions.

Here is a list of those currently subscribed.

A searchable Excel spreadsheet file of McNerneys and some spelling variants for the US Census records for the states of NY and PA from 1850 to 1920. Data files of over 2000 names including age, place of birth, family relationships.  Record locators are given so that you can look up the complete microfilmed record. It's about 450k.  A second is from city directories for Bufflo, NY and Pittsburgh, PA from 1910, about 35k. A third is of US Civil War records, about 21k. And a fourth is of Given Names, about 50k. This is A LOT of painstaking work, Thank You Dr. Mike, and your wife Jan, for giving us this boon!

Dr. Mike has also just completed two new files of Naturalization records in Excel format.
28 McNerney and variant spellings from Buffalo, NY (Erie County) 5 McNerny, McEneary, and McInerny from Chautuaqua County, New York (Dunkirk area  just west of Buffalo). No information on the Chautuaqua County index but the Buffalo index sometimes includes date of Birth or age, and some year of arrival. Both the Buffalo and Chautauqau County records are available in a format that Word for Windows can display, although the type is quite small.

Mike continues to work on transcription of these documents, tedious work at best. In his latest effort, he is in the process over the next few months of transcribing Baptisms and Marriages of the McInerneys and McNerneys in County Clare, Kilrush Parish. This can be very interesting to many of us looking in County Clare for our ancestors. There is a note written in the front of this microfilmed ledger by a J. McInerney as parish priest that notes there is a gap from Dec 9th 1831 to Jan 13, 1833. It also notes that 1832 was the year of the great cholera. Mike notes that the handwriting changes after the gap and all the McInerneys are now referred to as McNerneys. This file is preliminary and he expects to add to it as he goes through the microfilm.

Mike has an internet presence; both a Website and Email
