Distributed Computing
Well, I gave a year of CPU time to the ``Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence'' at home project. They haven't found any evidence of any, apologies to Carl Sagan notwithstanding. Maybe they will, maybe they won't. Since I have a home network, I've decided to split any unused CPU time between SETI and the RC5-64 decryption project sponsored by Distributed Net. This is a little more down to earth. The idea in this project is to use the combined power of computers to perform projects which are really too large and expensive to run on a single computer or group of computers, so worldwide help is solicited. SETI is another example of the power of distributed computing. Modern computers are way, way overpowered for simple stuff like word processing and graphic image editing, and the down time or slack time might be used to advantage. That is what the Distributed Net client does. There are several interesting projects going on, but the the RC5-64 project is using brute computing power to decrypt a message encrypted using 64-bit encryption.

Those Black and Whites are pretty good, eh? This one was professionally done by a staff photographer from  (Willimantic, CT's Local Newspaper) for a human interest writeup.

Guess who has bib number 4277?

This photograph was taken during the 1996 Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Road Race in Washington, DC. The singlet is the team uniform of the Dead Runners Society.
